Artist Statement

For the first ten years of my life, I had no siblings and all of my cousins were a 12 hour drive away. Therefore, the adventures that often take place during childhood were my own responsibility. I spent many afternoons exploring the trees behind my house, pretending to be a pirate or catching crawdads in the creek down the road. My mother would read to me until her voice was raspy. My favorites were the Chronicles of Narnia, Little House on Prairie and The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. At the time, I could not read for myself and therefore had to develop strong mental images of the words read over me. Images of centaurs and children wearing fairy wings danced through my mind, and I think much of what I do as an artist is experiencing those images again and capturing them on paper.

Oftentimes, I feel more connected to the art making process than I do to the final product. Painting and drawing are my preferred medium. I love that I can just loosely move my brush across the canvas and produce lines of color. At the start of a piece, I do not plan colors or mix paint, I just sort of find them along the way. I’m open to making mistakes and sometimes the mistakes I make become my favorite parts of the piece at its completion. There’s always more paper, more pencil and the ability to try a new idea. Making mistakes is something that we humans struggle to perform with grace. Through art, I am able to practice mistake making over and over and experience the grace of fresh paper.
